The online economy is booming. It’s not just a new trend, it’s a new way of life! Online job listings are on the rise as well, with many companies offering more flexibility and independence than traditional positions.
This trend has led to an explosion of online English teaching jobs, many of which pay you to teach English online.
Whether you’re looking for positions that require no prior experience or those that need to be filled immediately, you can find an English teaching job that fits your style and interests.
Many of these online English teaching jobs are available to anyone who can speak English at a native level. Here are some of the best options:
1. Magic Ears
Pay: $18 – $26/hr

Magic Ears is an online English teaching company based in China. They enable English speakers to make money through teaching English online to Chinese children between the ages of 4 to 12.
All teachers must have access to a fast internet connection and a quiet space where they can conduct lessons from home.
You will need to be a native English speaker to be hired, but if you fit the bill, the position could be well worth your time.
English teachers with Magic Ears can make up to $26 per hour and work around their own schedule.
You will be paid for each 25 minute class you teach, whether you’re working on one-on-one sessions or group classes.
With Magic Ears you don’t need to prepare any lessons of your own. All the lessons are prepared for you and it’s all about interacting with the students.
Requirements:
- Speak English at an idiomatic level
- Hold a bachelor’s degree or higher in any subject, or be a student actively pursuing a bachelor’s degree (must provide official transcript
- Hold a 120-hour ESL Certification* ( Magic Ears offers a fully-accredited 120-hour Advanced TESOL course for just $20)
- ESL/teaching experience is preferred but not a mandatory requirement
2. Pal Fish
Pay: $10 – $18/hr on average

Unlike Magic Ears where you need to have a computer in order to teach, with Pal Fish you only need your phone.
They have their own interactive app you can use to teach English directly from your phone and all you need is a camera and a stable internet connection. Just download the app and teach whenever you want.
There’s no minimum time commitment, and they’re one of the best paying online teaching gigs that don’t require a degree.
With PalFish you have the freedom to set your own pay rates. PalFish does not influence your decision about how much to charge.
The average rate for one-to-one class is usually between $10-$18 per hour. However there are teachers charging more than $30/hr that still get fully booked.
Requirements:
- Native English Speaker
- English Teaching Cerificate (eg TEFL)
- They do ask that you have some experience in English teaching, but they don’t speculate how much
3. Cambly
Pay: $10.20/hr ($0.17/minute)

Cambly pays fluent English speakers to have short, 20-minute discussions with adult ESL students located around the globe.
As an online ESL teaching platform, Cambly is a fun, low-pressure approach to chat with language learners in a casual environment and also help them with their own English skills.
Teaching English with Cambly can be a great option for you if you are new to the industry as they have minimal requirements, compared to other companies.
Another great thing is that most of the students just want to practice their language skills in the form of a casual conversation, so there is no specific curriculum you need to follow.
The pay is $10.20/hr and is transferred weekly through PayPal.
You need to be a native English speaker to be hired. They prefer applicants with teaching certifications, but do not require them.
Requirements:
Pay: $14 – $22/hr

VipKid is one of the popular companies when it comes to teaching English online.
They offer full-time, part-time and freelance positions, so you can choose one that fits your professional needs.
Lessons are already prepared for you and taught one-on-one for 30 full minutes from your computer.
They also offer training, lesson plans and support for your students during classes. You can choose which hours you want to work and when you want to set your schedule; you can even work exclusively on weekends or during holidays if your schedule allows.
This flexibility is great for people who have children or other time commitments that might interfere with working in a typical job setting.
The pay is usually pretty good too , though not as high as some of the other companies we have listed here.VIPKid teachers earn $14-$22 USD per hour and get paid between the 10th and 15th every month.
There’s a six-month minimum commitment, but you can work as often as you want.
Requirements:
- Legally eligible to work in the U.S. or Canada
- At least two years of experience in teaching, tutoring, coaching or mentoring.
- Fluent English speaker
- Make sure that you meet all technical requirements to use VIPKID
- Hold a bachelor’s degree or higher in any subject.
- Must have a TESOL/TEFL/CELTA or official teaching certificate from your country.
VIPKid DOES provide TESOL certification for its teachers in the training process, however it is not recognised by other companies in the industry.
5. Lyngo
Pay: $10-$12/hr

Lyngo is looking for enthusiastic English teachers to work online from home with students in Japan. Both native level English speakers and native level Japanese speakers are invited to apply.
No prior teaching experience is required in order to teach with Lyngo as they provide their own training. Although teaching certificates could be helpful, they are not necessary.
You can expect to earn between $10-$12/hr with Lyngo. Payments are made directly to your personal PayPal account.
There is no need to create materials since all instruction materials are provided.

- Fast, stable Internet connection

- Computer able to run Skype
6. Golden Voice English
Pay: $18-$25/hour

Golden Voice is a company based out of Toronto, Canada that is focused on teaching English to Chinese children grades 1-9.
It’s a relatively new ESL company, so it doesn’t yet have the same reputation as big-name companies like VIPKID.
However, the popularity of the program is growing thanks to its solid curriculum that follows the official government mandated English curriculum in China.
They offer both one on one and group lessons. You need to be a native English teacher with a degree or teaching certificate.
You need to be committed to at least 9 hours every week during peak hours and have 6 months of teaching experience.
Classes are 30 minutes long and materials are provided, so all you need to do is show up for the lessons.
Requirements:
- Native English speaker
- Committed availability, at least 9 hours weekly between 18:00 and 22:00 China Standard Time
- Qualified home office/location with an internet-connected computer with webcam capability
- Minimum six-month or equivalent combination of ESL/EFL teaching experience, including part-time, volunteer, community and coaching activities
- College/University Diploma and/or Degree
- ESL Teaching Certificate (e.g. TESOL, TESL, TEFL)
7. DaDaAbc
Pay: $15 – $25/hour

DaDaABC is one of the best online English teaching companies that offer part time jobs for teachers. They are also great for people who don’t have a lot of experience and need a simple job with little training to start.
DaDaABC is focused on elementary aged students, but all ages are welcome to apply. You can teach as few as 4 hours per week and still be placed in the system and receive class requests.
The company doesn’t have a strict rule on teachers’ nationality. They only care that you speak at a native level with a neutral accent.
TEFL certification is optional, but it does help and with nearly all companies it is good to have a TEFL or other certification.
Lessons are 30 minutes long and are taught on a one to one setting. They also provide all materials necessary.

8. SkimaTalk
Pay: $16/hr +

SkimaTalk is a company that connects Japanese adult professionals who want to learn English with native English speakers.
SkimaTalk don’t require you to have a degree or a teaching certificate in order to be accepted as a teacher on their platform. However, you must maintain great reviews from students and have an active profile on their online platform in order to stay competitive.
Lessons are 25-minute long and students can chose between more structured lessons created by SkimaTalk about a variety of topics or they can sign up for free-flowing conversation sessions.
You have the flexibility to set your own rates, but be aware that SkimaTalk takes 20% cut, so don’t forget to take this into account when setting your rate.

So, as you can see there are tons of companies out there that are focused on teaching English online.
You can expect to have a lot of job options if you can speak at a native level. It’s relatively easy to become an English teacher online with some of these companies, and many offer great pay.
